Small group work on "Rules of the Game," discussing imagery and possible theme(s) of the story. HW: Read the article "Why Chinese Mothers are Superior" from the Wall Street Journal. Pick a line (or several) and respond in a one page journal entry. Be sure to read to the end of the articles. There are lots of ideas you can explore here. The article usually provokes some good responses and I'm looking forward to a good discussion in class tomorrow!
Checked for journal entries. Shared memoirs. Completed book recommendation slip (school wide activity). Discussed imagery in "Rules of the Game." Small group work on theme of the story. HW: Journal entry 2/3rds of a page about your SSR book. Here's a link to some journal prompts to help you get started on the homework. If you don't have an SSR book at this time, you need to find one. You will be writing a book review the last week of this term on your SSR book, so I will be asking you for the title in class. Also, please remember to put some index cards in your bag to use as flashcards. If you have a glue stick, bring that too and you won't have to share in class.
Submitted memoirs. Finished dialectical journal entries about "Rules of the Game."
Read short story "Rules of the Game" by Amy Tan. Chose three quotes that are examples of imagery for dialectical journal entries. Don't forget to give 1) Context 2) Something literary (this time I gave you this part: Imagery) and 3) What it shows. HW: Finish typing final draft of memoir. Make sure you submit rough drafts.
Revised the dialogue written in class yesterday. Checked to be sure it showed something important, and that it is punctuated correctly. Also, checked for apostrophes being used to form contractions and to show possession. And finally, added a "thoughtshot," and checking to make sure this reflection is present throughout the piece and at the very end. HW: Start typing memoir, making sure to incorporate changes you made to improve the piece. On Friday, you will be submitting a final draft with earlier drafts attached to it. I will be looking closely at whether you are using the apostrophe rules you just learned (points will be deducted for each mistake). Bonus Points: Submit a photo of yourself at the time this incident occurred = 5 point. Submitting both a hard copy and a digital copy via email = 5 points. Understand that if you submit it digitally you agree to let me use it to teach future students. I won't use your name if I use it.
Review yesterday's quiz. Peer review of memoirs, looking for places to add a "snapshot" and dialogue. HW: Write a paragraph that provides a snapshot and another paragraph that inserts dialogue into your story. (See attached handouts)
NOTE: I have sent out emails for early signups for parents' night if you have provided your email in Jupiter grades. Otherwise, you can access the site on your own following this link :http://www.snappysignup.com/16080 Quick quiz on end of book. Talked about Show Don't Tell in narrative writing and practiced showing in writing. HW: Change 8 verbs in your memoir to make them more precise and active. Please use a different color pen and if you have a highlighter, highlight your changes.
