Edited sample book review using Smartboard. Read "A Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe. HW: Final drafts of book review due tomorrow. We have spent a long time studying this, so you should be all set, but here is a review of the definitions if you still feel shaky about it. Read the review called "Flights of Fancy" written by Stephen King and the review called "Killing Giants" by Joe Nocera. Blog in Edmodo (200 word minimum) about what you noticed in these reviews. For example, how might you write one yourself? What would you need to include? Did you think he was being positive about the book? Would you read it based on the review? Compare the two reviews. Mini lesson on checking for focus in your profiles. Look at rubric together. Complete exercises on complex sentence in grammar book. Pg. 136-138 12, 13, & Time out for review. If finished early, read SSR book. HW: Profiles due tomorrow. Typed, double-spaced with all drafts and rubric attached. Don't forget FCA's and peer edit.
Peer edits on profiles. Make sure you have sticky note attached to profile when you submit all drafts on Wednesday. Also, reviewed FCA's again. HW: Work on profiles.
Quiz on compound sentences. Add FCA's (focus correction areas) to rough drafts of profiles. FCA#1: Sentence combining or sentence variety. Do this 4 times in the piece. FCA#2: Replace vague words with more specific ones (10X) FCA#3: In the margins, write 1 or 2 words indicating what each paragraph is about. Then, check to be sure each one contributes to your focus. If it doesn't, either get rid of it, or make it connect. Your FCA work should be highlighted in some way in your draft (ex: underlining) so I can find it easily. Please use color coding: a different color for each FCA .HW: Work on profiles. Bring a rough draft to class on Monday for peer and teacher editing. Final drafts are due next Wednesday.
