A & C: Finished Chapter 4 of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Watched brief film about David and Goliath on youtube. Completed character analysis of Aunt Polly and Tom. ALL CLASSES: Papers are due at start of class on Monday. You must submit a rough draft with my comments, an updated works cited and a final draft. Classwork All Groups: Discussed strategies for papers--stay on topic, make new paragraphs, break up multiple lists, define problem clearly at the beginning, and respond to ALL my comments.
A& C: Discussed Tom Sawyer chapters 1-3 and listened to Chapter 4. D,E,G : Worked in lab on Problem/Solution papers. HW: All Blocks: Revise papers, paying attention to my comments. Make sure you have an updated works cited page and a rough draft when you submit the final copy. Deadline for papers has been extended to Monday, March 16th for ALL classes. HW: for DEG blocks. Discussed writing anecdotes.Started study guide in small groups, making a list of characters you have met in the first 3 chapters, the setting(s), the date of publication, and a summary of each of the 3 chapters. Took quiz on literature circle book then began new books. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for honors, and An Acquaintance with Darkness for non-honors. HW: Read the first 3 chapters of your new books.
Worked to edit body paragraphs. Used checklist attached here to focus on 5 specific mistakes to correct. (Counts as a quiz grade) If you were absent on Friday, you can do this during the weekend or plan to stay with me next Tuesday to make up the work. HW: Finish literature circle books for Monday. If you did not finish revision quiz in class, finish at home this weekend and remember to submit it on Monday.
Continued writing body paragraphs for problem/solution essays in the lab. HW: Body paragraphs of essays are due tomorrow at the beginning of the period. The total length of the papers for non-honors is 2-3 pages double-spaced and for the honors classes it is 3-4 pages double-spaced. You can figure that your introduction and conclusion will probably add up to a page.
Writing mini-lesson for research papers: 1. Avoid using contractions in formal writing. (Say "do not" instead of "don't") 2. Do not say "My research paper is about..." Remember, you are keeping yourself out of the paper and writing in the 3rd person to keep the paper more objective and forma. 3. Never start a sentence with a numeral--if the first word is a number, spell it out. 4. You can incorporate your source into some of your sentences to add to the validity of your ideas. For example, you could say: "According to William Blake, senior editor at The New York Times..."
HW: Continue writing your problem-solution papers and reading your books. Rough draft of the body of the paper is due at the beginning of the period on Friday. Checked for 15 notecards. Put cards in order of how they will be used in the problem-solution paper and began writing the rough draft, being sure to include citations as you go. Remember, when you put things in your own words (paraphrase) you need to include a citation. Here is a sample of a problem solution essay so you can see what they look like. It's longer than yours, and an example from high school, but I don't have any of my own student samples to share for this assignment. HW: Continue reading your literature circle book, plus catch up on your note-taking if you are falling behind.
